The Fabric Pantry at Kent State University was started in August 2021. I worked with a tiny janitor’s closet in Rockwell Hall , and have been able to grow donations from a couple bolts of linings to swatches, notions, bolts of fabrics and trims, as well as fully made garments.
The Fabric Pantry's main purpose is to provide free fabric for students in the fashion school. This will reduce the deterrent many low-income students have when applying to this cost-heavy major. On top of that, fast fashion has vastly increased the amount of fabric waste in the industry. By allowing students to donate fabric scraps and notions, we will be able to reduce Kent State's contribution to fabric pollution.
To further promote the pantry we hosted a fashion show called “Reduce, Reuse, Runway!” On April 21st in the KIVA. We had 27 designers and stylists that were required to create a look composed of at least three items from the Fabric Pantry.
We are currently collaborating with the Undergraduate Student Government on campus, and are looking forward to showing everyone the passion that Kent State gives its Fashion students through this organization.
This fashion show aimed to promote the Fabric Pantry on campus to students, as well as show off everything that can be done through this student organization.
